Direct Cremation

Not only is a direct cremation a simple occasion but it can also be private and worry-free in terms of finance. For many people it is more affordable. We still perform to the highest standards; we also guarantee that your loved one’s dignity will be upheld and we are work in the most respectful manner. What is Direct Cremation?

Our choice of “direct cremation” will help you if you want a more limited, private funeral arrangement or indeed if you worry about affordability.

Our compassionate staff will always support you with dignity and discretion. Direct cremation means that we will pick up your beloved from wherever they died and get them back to our premises to keep them safe until the day they are cremated. On that day we simply convey them, in a suitable coffin, to the crematorium, of our choice, which is usually Woodvale Crematorium, in Brighton. The cremation takes place on that day and the cremated remains are usually available to be collected on the next working day.

Who is a direct cremation suited to?

Such a simple farewell is suited to those who have opted to be cremated without a service, themselves, through their own choice and either documented in a will or dying wishes, or they may have relayed it verbally to their loved ones, maybe following donation of their body organs for example.

It may be that a direct cremation is best suited for financial purposes, either the person who died did not prepare financially for their own death or perhaps the person left to manage is not in a position to be able to pay for a conventional service. It could be that the deceased had no relatives or friends who had survived them or be able to attend due to distance and, in this situation, a conventional service may be unsuitable if a direct cremation would seem more suitable.

How Much does a Direct Cremation cost and what does it include?

£915 plus expenses (Cremation Charge plus Doctor Payment if applicable) – this choice provides the following:

  • Collection of the body from a place within 20 miles (extra charges may be incurred for out of hours).
  • Conveying to a crematorium of our preference in our suitable vehicle.
  • Coffin suitable for cremation is provided.

Is there a burial alternative?

Sure, there is – our ‘Direct Burial’ is also called the Direct to Graveside’ service. The deceased is taken to a cemetery and buried, without a ceremony, rather than being taken to the crematorium.

How much is the Direct Burial?

Burial selection starts from Price £1,100 including disbursements (burial plot and interment fee) – This option comes with the following:

  • Collection within 20 miles (extra hour costs apply).
  • Conveying to a Brighton & Hove Cemetery in our Hearsette.
  • Coffin suitable for burial.

What about dressing our loved one or viewings?

The principle of direct cremation or burial is for little to no hassle to all parties, with a view to keeping issues to a minimum and, in particular, to keeping costs to a minimum. We find that very few people even like to see the deceased. Maybe 1 in 10 would wish to come to see their loved one.

In this case, we can provide personal care of your loved one for an additional fee, i.e. washing and dressing the body either in their own clothes or in calico cotton sheets (we tend not to preserve by embalming or use unnecessarily intrusive therapies unless we are required by law or formal request).

What happens after the cremation?

Returning to the idea of little or no fuss for both sides, and again, to keep things to a minimum, including expenditures, we usually ask clients to collect the ashes from the crematorium themselves. Or, instead, they may opt to scatter the ashes in the memorial garden at the crematorium.

There is an opportunity, for a small additional cost, to have the ashes shipped to your house. There are a number of options available when it comes to urns. We usually advise clients to look on the internet, given the choice of urns available, and with our own individual tastes, we feel that choosing an urn is a more personal thing to do, and since there is usually no rush to do so, you can do all this in your time from the comfort of your own home.

How do I arrange cremation?

Usually, we would do that all over the phone, followed by email – we can also do a video conference with you, and if necessary, we might discuss meeting you personally, in your own house. We can’t afford this for everybody, but if you have problems getting out and about your house, we will consider it. But start by calling us to discuss your requirements.
